Is it too much to ask for a “mixed media” post type in Tumblr? Something that lets me upload a photo and a track would be really useful.

Anyway, this album is great. Juana Molina really loosened up her sound a lot with this one and ended up with a nice Books-y tone.

Rainbow Arabia - The Basta

I think M.I.A. is okay, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan. A few months ago I was walking up Manhattan Avenue and heard her performing at McCarren Park. M.I.A. drowned in reverb from what seemed like a million miles away did a lot for me than vanilla M.IA. ever will. This track by Rainbow Arabia reminds me of that evening.

After coming home from an election party, I discovered this fire in Greenpoint, less than a block from my apartment. It was odd. Half the people were talking about and observing the fire. The other half were giving each other high fives and celebrating Obama’s victory. A pretty dramatic backdrop to a pretty dramatic evening.

I understand the often valid opposition to Flash on the iPhone and in general, which mainly focuses on usability, processor intensiveness, and its commonly obtrusive manner of display, but Flash is unequivocally an excellent platform for application development (see Adobe AIR) that belongs on a device with design as a top priority. ActionScript is the self-taught language of Humanities majors and we use it to make pretty things that are hopefully engaging and cross-browser/OS compatible.

It always bugs me when people tout the merits of JavaScript specifically because you can use it to make something that looks like Flash, but isn’t, which is really the equivalent of trying to pass off a veggie burger as real meat. Sure, you can slather on a bunch of foreign sauces, stuff it with ground vegetables for texture, and slap it between a sesame seed bun, but can you really enjoy a “burger” unaccompanied by the piercing cry of an ungulate writhing in agony? Me thinks not.

In sum, you can look at a lot more porn with a Flash-enabled iPhone.

I, too, am excited about the possibility of Flash on the iPhone, but I wanted to address something.

People tout the merits of JavaScript because it lets you accomplish a lot of things on a site that make you a much better web citizen than presenting the same content in a Flash equivalent. Very rarely is it because it emulates Flash. The fact that it maintains some of the visual pros of Flash is a nice-to-have, but the fact that user experience isn’t demoted is what’s paramount. And this is coming from an avid Flash developer.
